10
Deaths.— There were 3,195 deaths registered in Hackney during
the year 1908, but of these 499 were of persons not resident in the
district, that is, persons dying in institutions in the district but
brought from outside districts. On the other hand, 430 residents of
Hackney died in institutions outside the Borough. Making the
necessary corrections, the number of deaths amongst Hackney
residents during the year was 3,126. This shows a decline of 108
deaths upon the number for the preceding year. The general death
rate from all causes for the year 1908 is therefore 13.3 per 1,000 of
the estimated population. On making further correction for age and
sex distribution by means of the factor 1.04262, I obtain for the
Borough the corrected general death-rate of 13.9 per 1,000 of the
population. The corrected general mortality rate for the year 1907
was 14.49 per 1,000 living, so the rate for last year shows a
satisfactory improvement upon the rate for the preceding year.
Amongst the sub-districts I find as usual the lowest death-rate in
the North (11.0 per 1,000) and the highest (15.0 per 1,000) in the
South-East district.

The corrected annual death-rate from all causes for London during 1908 is 14 5 per1,000 living.
