THE SHELTER.
During the year 1908 there were 87 persons admitted to the
Shelter while their homes were being disinfected. This total
consisted of 21 men, 27 women, and 39 children, showing a decrease

year 1907. The cost for maintenance of the above during last year
was £10 5s. 9d. The average period of stay in the shelter was
21 days.
The table on page 80 gives further particulars concerning these
contacts.
The expenses incurred in the conveyance of persons to and
from the shelter during 1908 amounted only to 7s. 6d.
CLEANSING OF PERSONS ACT, 1897.
It is a gratifying fact that the facilities afforded by the Borough
under the above Act for the cleansing of persons have been taken
advantage of during the past year to a greater extent than in
previous years.

The number of baths given to persons affected with vermin since the baths were instituted are given below—

During the year 1908 the total number of baths given reached
the number of 724, of these 165 were hot sulphur baths, and 559
ordinary hot water baths.
Amongst those cleansed was a large number of children who
had been excluded from school attendance owing to their being
infected with vermin. Below is given a list of the schools in the
Borough attended by these children, with the number and character
of the baths given.
