The inspection of outworkers' premises was suspended during
the early months of last year, owing to the successor to Miss
Newton, who resigned her appointment in 1907, not being appointed
until March, 1908. Miss Portlock was appointed Inspector for outworkers'
premises in succession to Miss Newton on the 26th March,
1908, and began her duties on the 1st May. During the remaining
eight months of 1908 Miss Portlock made 768 primary inspections
and re-inspections of outworkers' premises. Amongst these she
discovered 16 new workshops and 35 outworkers' premises in which
males alone are employed. She found also that 67 outworkers had
given up work, and 360 had moved to other premises.
During the 768 primary inspections made by Miss Portlock she
found 606 nuisances, for the abatement of which she served 302
Intimation and three Statutory notices.
