Births.— During the year 1908 the total number of births
registered in the Borough of Hackney numbered 5,673, of which
2,885 were males and 2,788 females. The figures show a diminution
of 88 in the number of births compared with that registered during
the year 1907. The annual birth rate for Hackney for the year
1908 is therefore 24.3 per 1,000 of the population. The table below
gives the number of births registered in the different sub-districts
with their respective birth rates compared with that of London.
The birth rate for London for the same period is 25.2 per 1,000
living.
Illegitimate Births and Birth Rates. — There were 403
illegitimate births registered in the Borough of Hackney during the
year 1908, but of these 259 occurred in the Salvation Army Rescue
Home, Mare Street, 253 being of mothers from places outside of
Hackney, also 17 illegitimate births occurred in the Hackney Union
Infirmary—the mothers belonging to other districts. Deducting
these 270 from the total registered there remain 133 illegitimate
