42
PUBLIC HEALTH (LONDON) ACT, 1891.
(a) Complaints of Nuisance.—During the year 1908 there
were 2,003 complaints of nuisances made to the Public Health
Department, and investigated by the Sanitary Inspectors of the
Borough. A considerable number, about 13 per cent., were
anonymous; but these received the same consideration as other
complaints. Notices were served for the abatement of any
nuisances found, on the person or persons liable under the above
Act to abate the nuisances.
(b) Infectious disease.—There was a less number of houses
inspected after infectious disease during 1908 than during the
previous year owing to less prevalence of notifiable infectious
disease in the Borough. The number of houses so inspected was
1847. This is a decline of 657 upon the number so inspected
during 1907. The nuisances found, were dealt with in the usual way
under the provisions of the above Act.
(c) House to House Inspections. — Inspections under this
head are distinct from and in addition to those made under the
headings (a) and (b). There were 1,554 house to house inspections
made in the Borough during 1908. These inspections have been
made as may be seen from the Register of Work given in another
part of this Report in various parts of the Borough, but chiefly in
Homerton, London Fields, Spring Hill and Hackney Wick, i.e., the
poorer parts of the Borough.
The nuisances found on inspection were abated in most cases
on the service of an Intimation Notice alone. The total number of
such notices served during the year was 4,365. It was necessary,
in addition, to serve 429 Statutory Notices and to issue 16 Summonses
to secure the abatement of certain nuisances. The result of these
16 prosecutions is given in the appendix to this report.
The following details refer to the house to house inspections
made by the Special Inspectors appointed for this work.
