As you are doubtless aware, legal proceedings have been
taken in certain cases where various articles of food have been
found to contain preservatives of this character. The Public
Health Committee have no desire to initiate proceedings without
first giving the various traders full warning of further
similar action on their part.
In accordance with the Committee's directions I have
therefore to request, in bringing this matter to your notice, that
you and all other traders in the Borough will in their own
interest take all necessary steps to ensure that bacon and all
other foodstuffs sold to the public are free from any injurious
preservatives whatever.
Your obedient servant,
JOHN FOOT.
REGISTERED MILKSHOPS.
Milkshops
unsuitable.
In a previous report allusion was made to the
new powers granted to local authorities in connection
with the registration of Milkshops and Dairies, such
authorities being now empowered to refuse to register
such premises if of opinion that the same are unsuitable
for the sale of milk.
These powers came into force 011 the 1st January,
1909, and in that month a circular letter was sent to
each milk vendor in the Borough calling attention to
the same, and requesting that all necessary measures
to avoid action by this Authority would be taken.
Some amount of improvement did take place, but
amongst a certain class of traders no notice appeared
to be taken of the warning.
