the whole population, so that between 1881 and 1891 the number fell from a
proportion of 133 in every 1,000 of the population to 118, or a decrease of
11.3 per cent., and between 1891 and 1901 it fell from 118 to 108, or a decrease
of 8.5 per cent., while between 1881 and 1901 the fall was from 133 to 108, or
18.8 per cent.
When the age period 5-15 is examined, it is noticed that the proportion of
206 to every 1,000 of the population remained the same in 1891 as it was in
1881, but when comparison is made with 1901, it is at once apparent that
there has been a heavy decrease, namely from 206 to 185, or 10.2 percent.
In 1901 the decrease compared with 1891 was continued into the 15—25 age
period, although it is slightly above the 1881 period. Thus it is seen that at the
present time there is a continued decrease in the proportion of persons living at
the several groups of ages up to and including the 15-25 period, while at the
later groups of ages there is a steady increase. This means that the proportion
of old people is increasing and that of young people is decreasing. To see
rightly what this means it would be well to apply the figures given in columns
2 and 3 to the estimated population of the year (1906) and to contrast the
result with each other. This has been done in the following table:—
