hitherto recorded. In the preceding year it had fallen to 5.5 per cent., while
on the other hand the average of 15 years had been 8.5 per cent. In this long
period 44,427 cases have been notified, of which 3,765 have died, or a percentage
of 8.5.
An examination of the returns given below, particularly of those since
1900, show that there has been a steady diminution in the fatality from the
infectious diseases.

This is particularly noticeable in the cases of Scarlet Fever and Diphtheria, which will be shown later under their proper heading. The numbers of the total cases for each year since 1891 are as follows:—
