on the platform of Maiden Lane Station, he found on immediately visiting the
premises that all the doors and windows were closed and that the fans were in
working order, and failed to detect whence the fumes had made their escape.
The fact is that businesses of this character, however great precautions
may be taken, will cause a certain amount of nuisance. The great thing is to
reduce it to a minimum.
Smoke Nuisances.—During the year 533 observations were made of
chimneys for the purpose of detecting the issue of black smoke, in addition to
which the London County Council reported 29 chimneys of workshops or
factories that were causing a nuisance. The following is a list of the premises
where smoke nuisances were observed :—
