Weekly lists have been received from the Medical Officer of
Health of the County of London, containing information of confinements
attended by midwives, and also of births of children whose
mothers entered institutions from Hampstead addresses.
From this source, the births of 15 children have been ascertained,
who may correctly be described as Hampstead children.
One of these was also notified by the Medical Officer of Health of
the borough in which the birth took place.
In the returns of outlying deaths which are received from the
General Register Office, there were the deaths of three children who
were allotted to Hampstead. As all three children died within 12
hours from birth, it would seem that the births as well as the deaths
should be credited to Hampstead, and this would bring the total
number of Hampstead births that occurred outside Hampstead to
at least 18. The total births belonging to Hampstead should, therefore,
be not less than 1359. It must be borne in mind, however,
that there are a number of births of this kind of which I receive
no information, so that the above figure must be taken as a minimum.
In calculating the birth-rates and the infantile mortality
rates, the official tables of the Local Government Board have been
taken as a basis, and these tables take no account of births occurring
outside the district. For this reason the births that have occurred
outside Hampstead have been neglected, and the rates calculated on
the number of births actually registered in the Borough.
Illegitimate Births.—Out of the total of 1341 births registered
in Hampstead, 43, or 32 per 1000, were those of illegitimate
children.
The following table shows the Ward and sex-distribution of
these illegitimate births, the births being allocated according to the
home addresses of the mothers.
