Of the 400 infant deaths which took place during the year, 127—
or 31.7 per cent.— occurred in Institutions; 20 took place in Poor
Law Institutions; 102 in Hospitals; 2 in the street; and 3 in Homes.
Of the infants taken to hospitals, 5 were found to be dead on
arrival, and a considerable proportion were in a dying condition
before they were removed. Inquests were held in 69 cases (17.2 per
cent.) The causes of death were as follows:—Suffocation in bed,
28; suffocation from spasm of windpipe, etc., 6; broncho-pneumonia,
11; exhaustion and debility, 6; heart failure, 6; convulsions, 8;
other causes, 4.
Ages at Death.—The following tables (I. and J.) show the
ages at and causes of death amongst infants, arranged in groups
for each of the three sub-registration districts.
