DEATHS OF INFANTS.
Of the total number of deaths from all causes, one
fourth (25.28 per cent.) are those of infants aged less
than twelve months ; as out of 4,341 infants who were
born alive only 3,769 attained the age of twelve
months; the remainder (572) became victims to
various infantile maladies. A mortality calculated
upon these figures gives a rate of 131.8 per thousand
births. In this direction we shew some slight improvement
over the previous year as in 1907 the rate
was six per thousand in excess of 1908. The general
Metropolitan rate has also fallen and stands at 113
against 116 for the previous year.
The heaviest infantile mortality was recorded in the
September Quarter, and was in great measure due to
excessive prevalence of diarrhoea.
