" The outlet from this cesspool is, so far as can be judged from the
surface, a 12in brick drain running from the said cesspool into the
main drainage system of the Workhouse, which at this point is a brick
barrel from 18in. to 2ft. in diameter. Near this point, and in the
same yard, is a manhole opening direct on to the brick barrel drain
just mentioned. At the bottom of this manhole was found several
inches of black sewage deposit, the drain and manhole being in a very
offensive and insanitary condition.
"A further opening on the drain was made near the gully in the
centre of the open yard, where it was found to consist of 6in. pipes and
entirely without any jointing material. The gully in the open yard near the
said wall was next examined, and the drain from this was found to pass
from this point into the intercepting trap at B Block previously mentioned.
The drain was examined near the stop cock box in this same
yard, and found to be in a similarly unjointed and defective condition.
The drain near the gully in the covered yard was also examined, when
it was found that the gully outlet was butted up to the pipe drain
without any socket, jointing, or proper connection. The drain outside
the lavatory to the covered yard was opened, and found to be of 4in.
pipes, with very rough cement joints, and laying on lime concrete. The
drain from the trough closets was opened and examined and found to
consist of 9in. pipes, which 9in. pipes are covered with concrete. This
concrete was not broken away, in order to avoid damaging the drain,
but the drain cannot be described as satisfactory.
Nursery Yard.
" The drain was opened in this yard near the gully outside the
scullery. It was found to be of 4in. pipes, a socket patched near the
gully ; the drain was entirely without joints, and the cement underneath
was black and saturated with percolation from same.
'"Opened the drain at the gully inside the scullery, where it was found
that the 4in. drain was unsound and without proper jointing material-
" Opened the drain by the gully by the nursery, where it was found
that the drain had some rough cement jointing on the face but without
concrete.
