REPORT
of the
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
FOR THE YEAR 1904.
To the Right Worshipful the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors
of the Metropolitan Borough of Islington.
Gentlemen,
In presenting the 49th Annual Report on the Health and Sanitary
condition of your Borough, I am glad to be able once more to congratulate you
on its very healthy state, and its comparative freedom from epidemic diseases,
so that it will compare most favourably in these respects with any community
in the country with a similar population, notwithstanding the fact that none
of them is so densely populated.
It is a matter for regret that the birth-rate, with some slight fluctuations,
has continued to decline steadily since 1875, and that in the year
recently finished, it reached the lowest point hitherto chronicled.
It is satisfactory to be able to report that the volume of work performed
by your Sanitary Inspectors has been as full and as useful as in previous
years, and that the workshops and places where men and women are
employed continue to be improved.
