BAKEHOUSES.
These places have been dealt with in Part IV. of this report in connection
with the work performed under the Provisions of the Factory and Workshops
Act dealing with them, because it is necessary to report to the Secretary of
State on the work done under them as a whole. (vide p. 166).
KITCHENS OF RESTAURANTS AND EATING HOUSES.
These have been already dealt with in Part IV. of this Report for reasons
similar to those above mentioned.
MILKSHOPS AND DAIRIES.
There were at the end of the year as many as 704 of these places on the
register, as compared with 674 at the end of 1903, and with 661 at the end of
1902. Altogether 1,112 visits were made to them. It is much to be regretted
that the conditions under which milk is sold are not much more stringent. By
the term milkshop one would naturally expect that some well-arranged, cool
place was meant, whose surroundings were of the best description, whose walls
were tiled, the counter made of marble or slate, and everything so constructed
that there would be no possibility of dust collecting. It is, however, far otherwise,
for as the regulations now stand there is nothing to prevent any person
carrying on the business in any place so long as the milkshop and its fixtures
are at all times kept in a cleanly state.
ADULTERATION OF FOOD AND DRUGS.
During the year there were 1,204 samples of food purchased or procured
for analysis by the Public Analyst, as against 1,016 taken in 1903. This
increase was due to the decision of the Council that in future not less than
1,200 samples should be analysed every year. Prior to this resolution the
number of samples usually examined was 800. Out of the 1,204 samples the
Public Analyst reported that 103 or 8.5 per cent. were adulterated.
The result of the work of the inspectors is set out herewith:—
