PLACES WHERE ICE-CREAMS ARE MANUFACTURED.
There were at the end of the year 234 places where ice-creams were made,
and to these 280 visits were paid, and they were all examined in the second
quarter of the year, prior to the commencement of the summer season, when
these articles are so much in demand. The proprietors, for the most
part foreigners, have generally obeyed the law, and have manufactured
the ices amidst surroundings that are a great improvement on those
which obtained some years ago, when the Medical Officer of Health first drew
attention to the objectionable conditions under which they were made. It is
much to be regretted that the law does not enact that the place of manufacture
should be registered, for then it would be impossible for any to escape
the pressure of the sanitary authority.
It was necessary to serve 75 notices to effect sanitary work that was
essential.
