Gentlemen,
Population.—The population of Islington on which the statistics of this
report are based is 339,137. It is distributed to the sub-registration districts
as follows:—Tufnell, 32,838, Upper Holloway, 34,822, Tollington, 34,765,
Lower Holloway, 41,537, Highbury, 65,112, Barnsbury, 54,278, South-East
Islington, 75,785.
The mean population for the ten years 1893-1902, on which the decennial
birth, death, and sickness rates have been calculated, is 334,783.
The figures relating to the population of the borough, whether actual or
estimated, are those published by the Registrar-General, and the various rates
have been calculated on them.
Births.—2,264 births, 1,174 being males and 1,090 females, were
registered. These are 252 below the corrected average (2,516) for the
preceding ten years, and are equal to an annual birth-rate of 26*70 per 1,000
of the population, as compared with a mean birth-rate of 29*68 in the
preceding ten years. In London the rate was 29.1 per 1,000 inhabitants.
