The 13 cowsheds have received 38 visits, and have been fairly well kept; the offensive
trade establishments have been visited regularly, a total of 47 visits being paid to these; and
also 13 visits to the knacker's yard. In none of these has any cause for complaint arisen
during the quarter.

Adulteration of Food.—During the first quarter 284 samples of food
and drugs were purchased, or procured during transit by the Inspectors, of
which, 5 were bought under the Margarine Act; 43 or 15*4 per cent, of the
total samples were found upon analysis to be adulterated.
The samples included, Milk, 151 ; Butter, 41; Coffee, 13; Cocoa, 8 ;
Demerara Sugar, 15; Iron Pills, 6; Cream of Tartar, 2 ; Tincture of the
Perchloride of Iron, 2; Whiskey, 1; Gin, 1. Of these there were adulterated :—
Milk 20, or 13 per cent.; Butter 5, or 12 per cent.; Demerara Sugar 7, or 47
per cent.; Iron Pills 4, or 66 per cent.
29 summones were issued, of which 26 were successfully prosecuted.
PenaltiesAltogether penalties to the amount of £56 were obtained,
and of this amount £35 15s. resulted from Inspector Ward's prosecutions, and
£20 5s. from the prosecutions by the other Inspectors.
