The ages at which the disease proved fatal varied very much. Thus,
whereas in early life, that is, up to five years of age, the deaths were by
comparison few, yet in the later years, that is from 15 to 55, they were
considerable, for no less than 409 died.

The ages at death were as follows:—

Tabes Mesenterica is a form of tuberculosis which attacks the
mesenteric glands of the abdomen. It is a complaint almost entirely confined
to childhood. It caused 77 deaths, which represent a death-rate of 0.22 per
1,000 ; 63 of these deaths, however, occurred among children under five years
of age, among whom it was fatal to the extent of 1.70 per 1,000 living at that
age.
Tubercular Meningitis is another disease almost entirely confined to
early life. It caused 20 deaths among infants, 43 among children between
twelve months and five years of age, and 14 at all ages over five years, thus
causing altogether 77 deaths.
Other Tubercular or Scrofulous Diseases were credited with 37 deaths, 4
of which were attributed to Tuberculosis of the Larynx, 25 to General
Tuberculosis, and 8 to Other Forms of Tuberculosis.
