TUBERCULAR DISEASES.
Phthisis, Tabes Mesenterica, Tubercular Meningitis, Scrofulous Disease.
Under this heading are included the diseases commonly known as Consumption
(Phthisis Pulmonalis), Tabes Mesenterica or consumption of the
intestines, General Tuberculosis, and Scrofulous Disease, which includes Lupus,
Tubercular Caries, and Pott's Disease.
Phthisis.—Happily the number of deaths (515) from Phthisis showed a
decrease on the annual average (554) of the preceding ten years. Nevertheless
the return is little less than appalling, for it means that 9.14 per cent. of the
deaths from all causes registered during the year were due to this fatal, but as
is now known, preventable disease. It is a sign of good omen to notice that
there has been a decreased mortality in the last two years, for whereas in 1900
there were 602 deaths, yet in 1901 there were only 545, and in 1902 515.
