PLACES WHERE ICE CREAMS ARE MADE.
So far as can be ascertained there are now 183 places where ice creams
are made, but as there are no means by which the makers can be compelled to
register their businesses it is possible, although improbable, for great diligence
was employed in seeking them out, that there may be a few more. They have
all been visited during the year by your Medical Officer of Health, as well as
by your Chief Inspector. A little trouble was experienced in some cases in
making the manufacturers of these goods understand that the conditions under
which they stored the ingredients from which they were made was unsuitable,
but this was due chiefly to their ignorance of English, which, it may be said, was
sometimes assumed. However, the difficulty was in every case remedied by
giving them an Italian translation of the clauses of the County Council's
General Powers Act 1902 dealing with their trade. There is no doubt that
already there has been a great improvement in the manner in which ice
creams are made, and that before long the conditions will be entirely
satisfactory.
The following is a copy of the circular which was left with each
manufacturer, merchant or dealer in ice creams:—
London County Council.—Ice Creams.

London County Council (General Powers) Act, 1902, which will come

creams or other similar commodity who within the County—
