On two or three occasions the attention of the Veterinary Surgeon of the London County
Council has been called to cattle suspected to be tuberculous, with a view to prevent the sale
of diseased milk, and in at least one instance Vet.-Inspector Shaw reported that the animal had
been condemned, slaughtered, and found to be suffering from generalised tuberculosis.
The offensive trade establishments, of which there are 3 tripe-boilers, 2 gut-scrapers, and 1
tallow-melter, have received 109 visits during the year, and as a whole have been well conducted.
There is one knacker's yard within the Borough, and this has been visited on 39 occasions,
and although sometimes obnoxious smells are perceptible for some distance away from
these premises, yet it is almost impossible to carry on a business of this description and at all
times avoid this nuisance, unless the whole of the process is conducted in closed chambers,
which, I understand, the County Council are about to enforce at this establishment. I have,
during such visits, found no cause for complaint regarding the general management of the
business.
In conclusion, I beg to thank you for your kind advice and assistance during the year. My
thanks are also due to the Chief Sanitary Inspector and the whole of the inspectors for information
and assistance rendered. I have also to acknowledge valuable information regarding
the duties from Mr. Young, your late Meat Inspector.
I am, Sir,
*
Your Obedient Servant,
H. WILKINSON,
Meat Inspector.
