REMOVAL OF DUST.
The removal of ashes, refuse and dust from houses in Islington continues
to be carried out satisfactorily, for during the year although there were 46,139
separate assessments yet there were only 198 complaints as to the non-removal
of dust, or in other words 2-5ths of one per cent. This is exceedingly good
work, on which the Horse and Depot Committee and its officers must be
congratulated. It has been done systematically, and, as a rule, very satisfactorily.
More praise could however be given if the men would more carefully
sweep up the ground round the dust bins.
It may be well to remind the Council that at one time there were many complaints at the manner in which this work was done, and also that they were received in thousands ; the following figures show this:—
Applications to remove dust. | Applications to remove dust. | ||
---|---|---|---|
18 91 | 10,138 | 1897 | 312 |
1892 | 9,964 | 1898 | 303 |
1893 | 4,986 | 1899 | 262 |
1894 | 4,506 | 1900 | 234 |
1895 | 4,596 | 1901 | 157 |
1896 | 4,245 | 1902 | 198 |
Since 1896 the work has been much better performed than previouly (vide
Table V. in appendix).
