Public Health and Housing Department,
Royal Hill, Greenwich,
April 1906.
To the Mayor, Aldermen, Councillors
of the Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich.
Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit herewith, in accordance with the
requirements of the Local Government Board, the Annual Report
of the Medical Officer of Health, for the year 1905.
The mortality statistics for the year are again of a very
satisfactory character. The Birth Rate of 25.95 per 1,000 is
slightly below that of the County of London as a whole, which is
27.1 per 1,000, this latter figure being 2.2 below the decennial
average, and in fact, the lowest on record. This rate has been
declining for many years, never having been below 30 per 1,000
until the year 1898; the highest rate (35.9 per 1,000) was
recorded in 1876. The recorded Death Rate of 13.27 per 1,000
of the estimated population, compares favourably with 15.1 per
1,000, the Death Rate for the County of London, and with 15.7 per
1,000, the figure for the 76 large towns. The County Death Rate
was 1.0 per 1,000 below that of 1904 and is thus the lowest on
record; and is 2.7 below the decennial average. The Greenwich
figure of 13.27 per 1,000, is 1.04 below that in 1904, and l.0l
below the average for the last five years.
