connected, trapped and amended; 26 houses have been abolished
as unfit for habitation; and want of underfloor ventilation has
also been attended to.
Houses Let in Lodgings. As indicated in the last Annual
Report, no special work has been carried out under these By-laws
during the year, on account of the inadequacy of the present staff.
House Drainage. Three hundred and eleven house drainage
systems have been reconstructed or repaired; 277 such
systems have also been opened, cleansed and amended; 76 new
systems and 475 surface drains have been constructed; 165
systems have been tested by smoke and 429 by water, of which
number 283 were found to be defective; 135 new soil pipes and
764 traps have been fixed, together with 141 intercepting chambers,
with or without fresh air inlets as was necessary. Fourteen cesspools
have been abolished; 178 areas, 158 yards and 11 mews
and stables have been thoroughly drained. Sixty-seven water
closets and 9 urinals have been erected; a pan, trap and water
supply have been furnished throughout in 386 cases, and other
fittings in 423 cases, whilst the water supply has been renewed in
174 instances. The water supply for lavatory purposes has been
disconnected from the drinking-water system in 144 instances.
Eighty-nine public-house urinals have been cleansed and repaired,
together with alterations to 2 other urinals, whilst a water supply
has been laid on or repaired at 12 such conveniences.
Sewerage. Complaints have again been fairly numerous,
particularly during the warmer months of the year, with respect
to the offensive emanations from the London County Council
Main Sewer passing through this District, and it has been thought
