in this way. It would, however, be of much assistance in the
matter if there were definite legal enactments applying to the
bakehouses above ground those provisions of the underground
bakehouse requirements which might be applicable.
Factories and Workshops. Seven hundred and twenty
inspections have been paid to these premises within the Borough
during the year. There were 321 Workshop premises on the
Register at the beginning of the year, 11 have been added during
the year, and 85 have been taken off, leaving a total now on the
Register of 247, of which number 238 have now been properly
measured up. This total number includes 20 laundries, 43
dressmakers, 8 fuel and firewood works, 4 cycle works, 8 milliners,
and various others, including 26 workplaces, such as blacksmiths,
barge builders, builders' yards, &c. Information has been sent
to H.M. Inspector of Factories with respect to 2 new workshops,
1 new factory, and 15 instances of young persons or females being
employed on premises where no Abstract is displayed. Five
complaints have been received from H.M. Inspector. One
prosecution was made under section 101 of the Factory and
Workshop Act, 1901, for illegal occupation of an underground
bakehouse.
The inspections made revealed the presence of defects or
insanitary conditions requiring the service of 76 written notices,
61 of these being in respect of workshops, including workshop
laundries, 5 in respect of workplaces, and 2 in respect of factories,
including factory laundries, and 8 with reference to homeworkers'
premises. The notices had reference to want of cleanliness
generally in 76 cases, want of ventilation in 2 cases, overcrowding
