The following is a summary of these proposals:—
Roofs.—Repair roofs, gutters and parapet walls, and render
them waterproof.
Walls.—Re-point the whole of the walls with Portland cement
and sand, and repair and make good all cement plinths.
Damp Course.—Lay in a proper damp course above the
foalings where necessary, consisting of two courses of slates laid
with break joints in Portland cement and sand.
Ventilation under Floors.—Remove existing floors and excavate
ground where necessary to a depth of two feet below floor line,
and cover where necessary the whole surface with 6 inches of
Portland cement concrete. Properly relay floors, and provide air
bricks to the spaces below the floors.
Ventilation of Dwelling Rooms.—Cut openings in the ceilings
and roofs of upper rooms, and provide dormer windows capable
of opening.
Cut openings in the walls and fix Tobin fresh-air inlets.
Water Supply.—Provide stoneware sinks in each ground floor
room, with trapped lead sink waste from each, to discharge into
gullies in the open. Supply draw tap and connections from the
main to each house.
Drains.—Reconstruct the drainage, disconnecting from the
sewer, and providing adequate ventilation. Provide a separate w.c.
for each tenement.
Thoroughly cleanse the walls and ceilings of the rooms of all the
tenements.
Repair paving where necessary, and limewash the walls of court
where necessary.
In executing the above works it was necessary to demolish one
of the cottages. This provided more air space about the remaining
cottages.
