Preserved Provision Factories.—There are eight wholesale
provision factories in the Borough. The Inspector made 63
surprise visits to these premises during the year. During these
visits he found and seized 6 pigs' heads affected with tuberculosis.
These cases with resulting proceedings are referred to above.
Smoke Nuisances.—During the year 1905 the Smoke Inspector
made 1,660 observations of chimney shafts of factories, workshops,
&c., in the Borough. These observations lasted from half-an-hour
upwards. The intimation notices served numbered 42, and the
statutory notices one during the same period.
Water Supply, Sec. 48 (2) Public Health (London) Act, 1891.
Under this section 37 certificates of proper and sufficient supply of
water were issued under this section to owners of either new houses
or houses rebuilt. The certificates include 292 houses and
tenements.
Bye-laws as to houses let in Lodgings.—At the end of 1904
there were 463 houses registered as houses let in lodgings in the
Borough, 226 being in Hackney Wick and 237 in London Fields
During 1905 there were 75 of these houses which ceased to be
occupied by members of more than one family, thus reducing the
total registered houses let in lodgings in the Borough to 388. During
the year 1905, there were 122 of these inspected, 10 of which were
found to be overcrowded, the remainder were more or less dirty and
required cleaning. The overcrowding was abated and the cleaning
done on the service of notices.
