is no doubt responsible for the large amount of the infant mortality of
the district. During the year a beginning was made in endeavouring
to impart instruction in the feeding of infants by forwarding to the
mother of each child born in the Borough a printed leaflet on this
subject.
I am pleased to add that the several officers of the Public Health
Department have during the past year, on the whole, carried out the
duties allotted to them to my entire satisfaction.
Population and Density.—The population of the Borough of
Hackney at the end of June, 1905, I estimate to be 227,630 persons,
and the density to be 69.1 persons per square acre of the Borough.

Marriages and Marriage Rate.—During the year 1905 there
were 1714 marriages solemnized in the Borough of Hackney. The
annual rate of persons married per 1,000 of the population during
that period is, therefore, 15.0 per 1,000. The marriage rate for
London during the same year is 16.9 persons married per 1,000 of
