suffering from enteric fever on the 27th October. She was treated
and nursed at home.
On or about the 5th December, Maggie J., age 10 years, stepdaughter
of the above, fell ill and was notified as suffering from
enteric fever on the 17th December. She was removed to hospital
on that day.
The housing accommodation for this family consisted of five
rooms in an eight-roomed house.
The only defects found in this house was an untrapped sink.
Group 10.—Alice T., aged 4 years, of 15, E. Place, fell ill
with sickness, pains in the head and stomach, and became an outpatient
at the North-Eastern Children's Hospital on the 24th July,
and continued attending there until 31st July, when she was
admitted an in-patient, where she remained until she had recovered.
By permission of the Resident Medical Officer I extract the
following notes from the clinical reports of this case:—"14th August,
temp. 103° last night; 18th August, temp. 100°, tongue coated,
spleen palpable; a few doubtful-looking spots on abdomen; heart
and chest clear.
The bacteriological report on the examination of the blood for
the Widal reaction is as follows:—"18th August—Bacilli sluggish to
start with, and grew more sluggish, but there was no definite
clumping. Result negative."
Owing, no doubt, to the rather negative result of the above
examination, this case was never notified as one of enteric fever;
but in the light of the subsequent cases which occurred, the
physician in attendance on the case was of opinion that the case
was undoubtedly one of enteric fever.
Albert Thompson, age 9 years, brother of above, fell ill about
17th August, with pains in the head and stomach; was admitted
into North-Eastern Children's Hospital on the 21st August, and
was notified as suffering from enteric fever on the 23rd August.
He was detained in the hospital until the 20th October.
