Between the ages of one and five years 266 deaths were
recorded, so that the deaths of children under the age of 5 years
numbered 871, or 42.6 per cent of the total number. These
deaths were equal to an annual rate of 47.2 per 1,000 of the
population estimated to be living at that age.
Deaths of Illegitimate Infants.
75 of the children who died before attaining the age of one
year were illegitimate; the mortality among them being in the
proportion of 337 deaths to every 1,000 births, or nearly three
times as heavy as that of children born in wedlock.
Insurance of Infants.
Certificates under the Friendly Societies Acts were issued
in respect of 468 children under the age of five years, 54 per
cent. of the children dying at this age being insured.
Mortality at School Age.
At the ages of 5 to 15 years, which is approximately the
school period of life, there were 68 deaths, or 3.3 per cent. of
those at all ages, being equivalent to a rate of 2.3 per 1,000 of
those living at that age.
