In only four cases was there any definite family history of
cancer, which in one case had been the cause of death of three
members of the family.
There did not appear to be any prevailing insanitary conditions
to be complained about in the premises that had been
occupied by the patients, in fact, the only one mentioned at all
frequently, was dampness of walls.
Developmental Diseases. These diseases are credited
with 298 deaths, equalling a death rate of 2.99 per 1,000. Of this
number 61 are ascribed to premature birth, 1 to injury at birth,
14 to debility at birth, 3 to Atelectasis, 7 to Congenital defects.
7 to Rickets, 56 to vague causes, such as Atrophy, Debility,
Marasmus.
Sixteen deaths are ascribed to Dentition, and 133 to Old Age.
Local Diseases. Nervous System. This class of disease
is credited with 155 deaths, equalling a death rate of 1.56 per
1,000, and is distributed chiefly as follows:—43 Convulsions,
16 Meningitis, 35 Apoplexy, 8 Softening of the Brain, and 7 to
General Paralysis of the Insane.
Circulatory System. To this class 131 deaths are
ascribed, equalling a rate of 1.31 per 1,000, and amongst the
number Endocarditis, or Valvular Disease of the Heart, is
credited with 47 deaths.
Respirators System. Two hundred and fifty-seven deaths
are ascribed to this class of disease, 248 of which (109 being in the
East District, 69 in the West District, 35 in St. Nicholas, 33 in
Charlton, and 2 in Kidbrooke) are ascribed to Bronchitis,
