1,000 for the Borough, which favourably compares with the average
rate 1.60 for the County of London, wherein it ranged from 0.85 in
Hampstead, 0.90 in Wandsworth, and 1.05 in Paddington, to 2.28
in Finsbury, and 3.01 in Holborn. Locally the variations were 1.0
in East Greenwich and Charlton, 1.3 in West Greenwich, and
1.9 in St. Nicholas.
Dietetic Diseases. This class of disease is credited with
occasioning 6 deaths, but as stated previously, this figure can
by no means be taken as an indication of the correct number of
deaths due to these causes.
Constitutional Diseases. This large class of diseases,
including amongst others Gout, Cancer, and Diabetes, is credited
with occasioning 87 deaths, equalling a death rate of 0.87 per 1,000.
Of this number cancer and malignant diseases take the lion's
share with 77, being an increase of 15 over last year's figures (31
being is East Greenwich, 20 in West Greenwich, 7 in St. Nicholas,
and 19 in Charlton).
In connection with deaths from this class of disease special
enquiries have been instituted during the year.
All deaths registered as having been due to cancer or malignant
diseases during 1901, have been enquired into to the
number of 57, certain information being obtainable in 37 of the
cases, in the remaining 20 cases the relatives had in many cases
removed, or in a 1few cases declined to give any information; the
addresses of the patients have been specially noted, and a card
filled up bearing the information relating to each case, and filed
for convenient reference. The spot where the death occurred
