DEATH RATE.
On the estimated population, I calculate a mortality for the year
1902 of 21-15, this is nearly one per thousand above that of the
previous year. The increase is to some extent accounted for by the
small pox epidemic from which we suffered in company with other
East End Boroughs. The death rate for the whole of London was,
however, unaffected by the epidemic, as it shews a small decrease,
and stands at 17.2, as against 17.6 for the previous year.
MORTALITY RATES IN SUB-DISTRICTS.
Amongst the 961 deaths credited to the East sub-district, are included
those of 42 homeless persons, who died in the workhouse
infirmary. The Registrar General apportions such deaths to the
poor law district of the institution in which they occur, and as all
districts having workhouse infirmaries are treated in a similar
manner, the Borough as a whole, has no reason to complain. It
would, however, be manifestly unfair to saddle the East sub-district
with the whole of these deaths ; they are therefore excluded in calculating
the mortality rates for the sub-districts.
In the following table the mortality rates in the three registration
sub-districts are shewn, and compared with those of the previous
year. It will be noted that the rate in the East sub-district has considerably
advanced; here again small pox is responsible, as the
visitation fell heaviest on this portion of the Borough.
