It will be remembered that the population is 100,487.
CANCER AND MALIGNANT DISEASE.
There were 72 deaths certified during the year as due to
Cancerous or Malignant Disease, which gives a special death rate
of 0.70 per 1,000. The age and sex incidence of these deaths
was as follows:—

The occupation of each person dying of Malignant Disease has
been noted. These have been various, and in no case is there
any obvious connection between the occupation and the cause of
death. Ninety-eight per cent, of the cases occurred in persons
over 40 years of age.
As to local distribution, it may be remarked that the distribution
was fairly uniform throughout the Borough, and there was no
instance of more than one case in a house.
It is not probable that these returns are strictly accurate.
They are in all probability under the mark, though in some
instances the diagnosis included in the 72 cases must be accepted
