Whooping Cough.—The deaths from this disease numbered 155,
showing a great increase upon the previous year. The mortality rate
per 1,000 is 0.64.
Class II.
Constitutional Diseases.—This class of diseases furnished 776
deaths during 1893. Of these, 428 were due to tubercular diseases
and 160 to cancer. The mortality for these two diseases respectively
is 1.7 and 0 6 per 1,000, and for the whole class 3.2 per 1,000.
Class III.
Developmental Diseases.—The deaths in this class numbered 377.
The mortality rate is therefore 1.5 per 1,000.
Class IV.
Local Diseases--The accompanying table will show what diseases
are included in this class. The deaths numbered 2,148, of which 926
were due to diseases of respiratory organs. The total gives a mortality
rate of 8.9 per 1,000.
Class V.
Violent Deaths.—Under this head 132 deaths were recorded. This
is equal to a rate of 0.5 per 1,000.
Class VI.
Ill-defined, and not specified causes.—The number of deaths under
this head has a tendency to grow less every year, because of the
increasing accuracy in diagnosis and the more frequent post-mortem
examinations. The number during the year was 280, making the
rate 1.2 per 1,000.
