maintained at an annual expenditure of about
£1,850. The income derived from letting the
tenements is £5,550, being 1.83 per cent.
interest on the capital outlay.
They are much sought after, and the rooms
are rarely empty. The rent varies from 4s. 6d.
to 9s. per week.
The death rate for 1900 was 17.8 per 1,000 per
annum [of which 52.6 per cent. were children
under 5 years of age].
Deaths of children under one year to 1,000
births were 146, as against 179 for the City
generally.
The number of births was 41, viz.:17 males
and 24 females.
The birth rate has risen from 37.5 in 1899
to 38.4 in 1900 ; being again much below the
average for the previous five years, viz., 42.7
per 1,000 per annum.
There has only been one illegitimate birth in
in these buildings since 1894, a fact that speaks
well for the morality of the inhabitants, who are
mostly Jews.
