According to the Returns of the RegistrarGeneral,
the decennial average annual number of
deaths (1890-99) was 741, and the mean death
rate 22.1 per 1,000. These averages are based
on the Returns after allocation of all residents
dying outside the City jurisdiction.
The infantile mortality last year was at the
rate of 179 per 1,000 births registered, compared
with a decennial mean rate of 146. The rate
for the Metropolis in 1900 was 160, the same
as the decennial mean rate. [Registrar-General's

Causes of Death.
In Table VII. the causes of death of residents
of the City have been tabulated in the new form
prescribed by the Local Government Board.
An attempt has been made to distribute the
deaths in Public Institutions according to locality
of the home of the deceased persons, but the
information has not been given in a very large
proportion of cases. Hence the discrepancy
