BAKEHOUSES.
Bakehouses are workshops under Sections 34,
35 and 81 of the Factory and Workshop Act of
1878, and, as such, subject to the authority of
the Public Health Department.
The proposed amendment in the law relating
to these places, introduced in the Factory and
Workshop Bill of last Session (1900), was
referred to in page 100 of last year's Report,
under the heading of Factories and Workshops.
This Bill did not reach a second reading, being
withdrawn by the Government on the 16th July
owing to pressure of public business.
There are 40 bakehouses in the City of
London, viz. :—14 in the West Sanitary District,
10 in the Middle, and 18 in the East District,
located as shown in the following Table :—
Note.—Clause 28 (1) of the Factory and Workshop Acts Amendment
Bill, read a second time in the House of Commons on the 17th June,
1901, defines an " underground " bakehouse as one of which the floor
is 3 feet or more below the surface of the ground. See my Report
on this Bill to the Sanitary Committee, 20th May 1901.—W C,
