LAVATORIES AND SANITARY CONVENIENCES,
PICCADILLY CIRCUS.
During the twelve months ended at Lady-day, the men's
closets have been used by 234,746 persons, the ladies' conveniences
by 253,512, the men's lavatory by 45,790, and
the ladies' lavatory by 5,024. No record is kept of the use
of the urinals, for which no charge is made, but they were
resorted to by a very large number of persons during the
year and prove every year that they supply a much needed
want in the neighbourhood.
It will be seen on reference to the accounts (page 134,
that the fees received during the year for the use of the
lavatories and conveniences amounted to £2,458, and the
outgoings for working expenses to £1,384 1s. 8d. To
the outgoings, however, must be added a proportion of the
establishment expenses for supervision and management.
UNDERGROUND CONVENIENCES—GREAT
MARLBOROUGH STREET.
The Vestry having last year decided to construct underground
Conveniences and Lavatories for both sexes in Great
Marlborough Street, tenders were invited for the work, and
the lowest one received, viz, that of Messrs. Finch & Co.,
offering to construct the Conveniences in accordance with
the drawings and specification for the sum of £1,345, was,
after some delay, ultimately accepted. The Conveniences
have been completed to the satisfaction of the Vestry, and
were opened to the public on the 22nd February, 1897.
A sufficient time has not elapsed to give details as to the
extent to which the Conveniences are used.
