These lamps will take two or three months to supply, and
your Sub-Committee recommend (b) that the said estimate of
Crompton & Co., Limited, be accepted, and that an order be at
once given for the supply of 65 arc lamps of the description and
at the price named.
Your Sub-Committeee also submit a plan showing the exact
positions of the proposed arc lamps as arranged between the
representatives of the Vestry and the Company, and approved
by your Sub-Committee. Your Sub-Committee recommend (c)
that the positions of the arc lamps proposed to be erected in the
main thoroughfares as shown on the plan now submitted be
approved and adopted. The positions shown on the plan have
been most carefully measured and thought out, due regard being
had to the distances between the lamps, the existing refuges and
the side streets. It will be noticed from the plan that it is proposed
to adopt side lighting in Pall Mall, and centre lighting in
all the other thoroughfares. Piccadilly Circus presents considerable
difficulties, but the only practicable way of dealing with it
appears to be that adopted. Several existing refuges will have to
be moved and additional ones erected.

Of this number, five in St. James's Street and Piccadilly are on
the border of the Parish of St. George, Hanover Square, which
three in Coventry Street are on the boundary of St. Martm-in-theFields.
These lamps will of course light the whole width of the
thoroughfares in question, and your Sub-Committee accordingly
recommend (d) that the Vestries of the two parishes beforementioned
be asked to contribute one half of the cost of
providing and erecting the lamps in question, and of lighting and
maintaining the same.
