COAL PLATES.
During the past twelve months 47 coal plates were cut
into the paving.
REFUGES.
Additional refuges have been formed, viz.:—1 in Broad
Street, between Poland Street and Lexington Street, and
1 in Great Marlborough Street, by Poland Street. Each
refuge is lighted with a Sugg's " Lambeth" lamp of 80
candle power.
Refuges were also being constructed round the new
electric light columns in the main thoroughfares, but were
not completed at the 25th March.
PICCADILLY CIRCUS.
The stone pitching with which the carriageway of
Piccadilly Circus was paved and which had been in use
some 12 years, being quite worn out, was replaced with
new stone with a bituminous joint, after the close of the
London season.
BEAK STREET.
The carriageway at the entrance to Beak Street from
Regent Street, which was previously somewhat cramped,
has been widened to admit of a freer passage of vehicles.
SANITARY SHELTER.
Two rooms at the Sanitary Shelter have been fitted up
respectively as a Receiving Room and Bath Room, for the
use of persons arriving from apartments: in which there
have been cases of infectious disease, so that they may
temporarily occupy the Shelter during the time their own
apartments are being disinfected.
