Report for the year 1896 made to the Vestry of Saint James's, Westminster

In connection with the repaying of Piccadilly, the footway
paving surrounding the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain
w7as very much curtailed in extent and altered in shape
and the positions of the adjacent small refuges moved to
facilitate the vehicular traffic. The carriageway between
the Fountain and the Piccadilly Lavatories, &c., was also
raised at one point as much as 19 inches, the camber of the
road reduced from 20 inches to 7½ inches, and the second
step round the Lavatories entirely removed.
