the figures returned at the last Census are added
for the purpose of comparison:—
1896. 1899(estimated to the
middle of the year ).
*St. Botolph 9,762 8,374
Cripplegate 3,299 2,677
St. Sepulchre 9,591 8,734
Allhallows 9,059 8,254
31,711 28,039
The population of the City, as ascertained by
the Day Census taken by the Corporation at
its own expense, was found to be in 1866—
170,133; in 1881—261,061; and in 1891—
301,384, showing an increase between 1866
and 1881 of 90,928, and between 1881 and
1891 of 40,323, so that if this progressive
augmentation has been maintained since 1891,
a Day Census at June, 1899, would have shown
a population of about 338,850.
The Day Census taken in May, 1891, proved
that 1,186,000 persons and 92,000 vehicles
entered and left the City on the day the counting
was made.
* The sub-districts of St. Botolph and Broad Street were united on
the 1st September, 1899, and are so included in this Table.
