"details as to the methods of procedure, &c. The
"matter is really a most urgent one by reason of the
"present hot weather, and the Committee wish to place
"the business in train as speedily as possible. My visit
"in anticipation of your Council's action will in the end
"expedite matters, seeing that the Inspector will be
"ready to proceed with the duty at once on receiving
"instructions from the Council.
"Any expenses entailed in carrying out the duty will,
"of course, be recouped by the Committee.
"I am, Dear Sir,
"Yours faithfully,
"(Signed) CHAS. J. HUDDART,
"Secretary of Committee.
"The Town Clerk,
"Guildhall, E.C."
On the 22nd August a somewhat similar communication
reached me:—
"Local Government Board,
"Whitehall, S.W.,
"19th August, 1899.
"Dear Sir,
"The Departmental Committee appointed by the
"President of this Board for the purpose of inquiring
"into the use of preservatives and colouring matters in
"food, are anxious to secure from the consignees
"samples of imported goods coming from foreign
"countries. The Committee regard this matter as of
"very special importance, and they therefore desire me
"to ask your aid in obtaining the requisite samples.
