appeared at the Mansion House in answer to
two summonses taken out by Mr. Solicitor,
under your instructions.
In the first, the defendant was charged with
selling Margarine in a package not "durably"
marked, as prescribed by the Act; and, secondly,
for exposing Margarine for sale by retail, the
same not being branded, or marked in such a
manner as to be visible to the purchaser.
The charges were heard before Sir Joseph
Savory, and the defendant was convicted and
fined 5.v. and 2s. costs on each summons.
At the date of my last Annual Report a Bill
was under consideration by the legislature for
amending the law relating to sale of food and
drugs, which subsequently passed both Houses,
and received the Royal Assent on the 9th
August, 1899, as the 62 & 63 Vict., c. 51,
1899, the Act to come into force on and after
the 1st January, 1900.
