Nine prosecutions were instituted against
offenders. In two of these the summonses were
withdrawn upon technical grounds; but convictions
were obtained, in the remaining seven, and
fines imposed from 5s. to £5 and costs.
One sample of Margarine was collected at
the premises of George Outten, provision dealer,
38, Mansell Street, Aldgate, labelled contrary to
the Margarine Act, in addition to which the
Inspector reports that the dealer's stock of the
same parcel was not labelled in any way.
The following is the Report of Inspector
Ralph, to which I have added the statutory
certificate of analysis as required by the Margarine
Act (50 and 51 Vict., cap. 29):—
"I beg to report that on Friday, January 20th inst.,
"I visited a small general provision shop, No. 38,
"Mansell Street, Aldgate, occupied by Mr. George
"Outten, and asked for 1 lb. of Butter, but received the
"reply: 'I have not got any.' I then asked for 1 lb.
"of Margarine, which was served, and I paid the sum
"of l0d. for it. I told the occupier I was an Inspector
"under the Food and Drugs Act, and had purchased
"the Margarine for the purpose of it being analysed by
"the Public Analyst, and offered to divide the same
" into three parts, which was accepted.
