The new disinfecting apparatus, whereby articles are submitted
to the action of super-heated steam at high pressure, has been at
work since. May, 1893. The whole of the working arrangements
were revised, and the duties of the men who were engaged for the
purpose, were assigned by the Committee. So far I have reason
to be satisfied with the present plan of dealing with infected articles.
It is advisable to state that the additions to the Destructor were
completed, and the new cells were being worked before the year
terminated.
It has been unfortunately necessary for several successive
years to allude to the preparations which the Board deemed it
imperative to make in carrying out the Cholera orders of the Local
Government Board. I have little to report upon this matter,
because our preparations were mainly renewals of those of last
year. It was, however, provided that a large open space in the
possession of the Board, should be efficiently drained, so as to be
ready upon emergency for the erection thereon of temporary
hospitals. The previous policy was again adopted, whereby no
public notices were issued, but such notices could have been
circulated in a few hours had it been necessary to do so.

Thirty-one women and 21 men died at above the age of 80
years. One Uncertified Death was reported during the year.
