ON THE SANITARY CONDITION OF
Under-ground rooms:—
Use prevented as separate dwellings 6
In addition to the above-mentioned work, the street
and other markets have been regularly inspected every
day (including Sundays).
The Stables and mews, 62 in number, have been
regularly inspected, more particularly in regard to the
periodical removal of manure. Occupiers of stables
have all complied with the requirements of the County
Council's bye-laws relating to the provision, situation
and cleansing of receptacles for dung.
The "Rag-and-bone" shops have also been inspected
from time to time.*
The number of works of sanitary improvement
carried out include a number of extensive and complicated
schemes of re-drainage and re-construction which
have been carried out in a satisfactory manner under
the supervision of your Inspectors. They include the
re-drainage of the Gaiety and Lyceum Theatres, the
Royal Italian Opera House,several important restaurants,
clubhouses and schools.
Combined Drainage.—The law in regard to that
part of the drains liable to be constructed and kept in
repair by the owners of houses and that part under the
control of the Local Authority is in a confused state,
and considerable trouble has arisen in many metropolitan
districts.
