26
ages under 5 recorded from South Paddington, there
were 264 cases in the North; there died 382
children in North Paddington at ages between 1 and
5 years, for every 100 in South; and for every 100
children dying from zymotic diseases at the same
ages in South Paddington, there died 509 in North.
Taken as a whole, the contrasts between the two
districts were more marked in 1895 than in 1894.
Should it be suggested that the fact that the proportion
of children under 5 years in St. Mary's District
is double that in St. John's, the answer will be that
the rates given in the Table are calculated per 1,000
of the children estimated to be living, which eliminates
effects of such differences in the proportions.
